Our Mission

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has been telling stories for all of North Texas for 111 years. We
have been here to explain new policies from City Hall, highlight the best new barbecue joints,
investigate irresponsible civic behavior and share the joys of great athletic achievements by
TCU, the Rangers and the Cowboys. And as our communities continue to grow in a new,
promising era, we want to stay here, reporting for you locally with appreciation and admiration
for Fort Worth, Arlington and Tarrant County.

It is in this spirit that we are forming a union. No matter the owner, our union will give us a local
voice. It ensures that the Star-Telegram will represent Fort Worth. It ensures we will have
enough reporters, photographers and editors to cover all of the proud, diverse neighborhoods
of our city and suburbs. As Amon G. Carter said: “A man cannot live off his community. He
must live with it.”

The last two decades have been difficult for the Star-Telegram. We are now under the
ownership of New Jersey-based hedge fund Chatham Asset Management, which purchased
California-based McClatchy out of bankruptcy. McClatchy oversaw multiple rounds of layoffs
and buyouts, diminishing our remaining staff’s ability to fully cover a rapidly growing area that
includes the 13th-largest city in the United States.

Chatham has said it will stress the importance of local news, but how can we guarantee this
happens? How can we maintain the local flavor and quality that our area deserves when the
Star-Telegram is owned by yet another outside company? Our best choice is to unionize. That
is why we are asking McClatchy to recognize the Fort Worth NewsGuild.

Our union will push for regular pay raises, adequate protections against layoffs, parental leave
and other benefits to ensure the Star-Telegram can thrive. Most of all, a union will give us a
better opportunity to tell the stories that matter to all of Fort Worth’s diverse communities. And
that is what we care about the most.
